Hi! By now, everyone has probably jotted down their most anticipated books for the year. I’m excited to share mine too, but I wanted to take a moment to look back and share my favorite reads from 2020 before all else.
My best-of list is a bit shorter this time around, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t love the rest—in fact, I handed out sixteen 5-star ratings for 2020! Here are a few standouts:
WHEN WE WERE VIKINGS by Andrew David MacDonald
This book manages to squeeze in huge, weighty topics like alcoholism, poverty, healthcare, abuse, and equal opportunity. MacDonald employs a witty, affecting narrative that engages the reader straightforwardly while emphasizing the essentials of security, human growth, and development.
ANXIOUS PEOPLE by Fredrik Backman
This story beautifully fleshes out our inner turmoil. Backman invites us into a narrative that exposes human vulnerability—including our own—cleverly swaying us to look at the dreariest of circumstances in a different light and challenging us to choose kindness at every turn.
BLACK SUN by Rebecca Roanhorse
The powerful first installment in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy. Every detail reveals in-depth research and meticulous rumination, from the rich worldbuilding and plot to the fantastic ensemble of characters.
MISS BENSON'S BEETLE by Rachel Joyce
How can a search for a beetle also be a journey of self-discovery, determination, and friendship? This book answers that question brilliantly. Rachel Joyce has a gift for unfolding life through small, funny, poignant, and hopeful details. I would recommend her work anytime.
