Required Reading: April 2014


Have you been out lately? I'm not sure SPF 30 is enough to protect us anymore! But if there's one thing that needs heat, it's my reading list. March was really slow for me, mostly because all the commencement exercises tested my patience these past few weeks. I'll need some serious R&R with a few good books in tow.

Here are the books I read in March:

  1. The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu — 4★
    A realistic story with a great voice; highly recommended.

  2. The Emissary by Marc Pietrzykowski — 4★
    A unique experience.

  3. A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin — 5★
    As with every book in this series, this installment feeds the senses in every way possible—breathtaking and gut-wrenching at the same time. I'm still waiting for my emotions to settle down before I write a proper review of my reading experience.

  4. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd — 3★
    I really want to be fair to this book. It was engaging, but I can't look past a few things that felt off to me. More thoughts on this later.

April TBR



For April, I want to read more, but I have to be careful not to bite off more than I can chew. Usually, I throw caution to the wind, but I've agreed to a buddy read this month, which requires commitment. So, allow me to list these two for now, and I can add more as April rolls on:

  • White Teeth by Zadie Smith — a buddy read with Monique.

  • If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino — TFG's book of the month.

    Oh, I read those 2 books that you're planning to go through this month, Louize! They really are wonderful reads. White Teeth is very satisfying. It made me a fan of Zadie Smith!

      I believe we've had Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell before; but there were plenty of us to really take note everyone's thoughts. Let's see if there any other takers on this one in the group. And, YAY! ♥

    Have on your White Teeth buddy reading with Monique, Louize! I'm going to take occasional peeks on your discussion because I've been reading good things about this book. :)

    And I will do as encouraged. I will make my Lenten meaningful this year. :)

    I have yet to read a Zadie Smith book. I'll look forward to what you and Monique will have to say about it. I enjoyed our ADWD buddy read! I'm sad though that the release of the 6th book is still a looong way away. But the 4th season of the HBO series, coming out this April, might help with the wait. :D
