From birth, Noah Hogarty has lived with severe cerebral palsy. He is nearly blind, unable to speak, and cannot run, walk, or crawl. Yet his mind works just as well as any other twelve-year-old’s—maybe even better. And Noah holds a secret dream: to become a great spy, following in the footsteps of his aunt, Liv “Boots” Bergen.
Now, freshly returned from training at Quantico, FBI agent Liv Bergen is thrown into her first professional case. Working side by side with veteran agent Streeter Pierce, enigmatic agent and lover Jack Linwood, and her bloodhound Beulah, Liv must race to find five-year-old Max—last seen at the Denver International Airport—before this Christmastime abduction turns deadly. Meanwhile Noah, housebound, becomes wrapped up in identifying the young face he sees watching him from his neighbor’s bedroom window, but he can neither describe nor inscribe what he knows.
And his investigation may lead to Noah paying the ultimate price in fulfilling his dream.
Noah’s Rainy Day (the fourth novel in Brannan’s mystery series) combines classic Liv Bergen irreverence and brainpower with an unflinching look at the darkest of human motivations, all while a whirlpool of increasingly terrifying events threatens to engulf Liv and Noah both in one final rainy day.

This is the fourth book in the Liv Bergen Mysteries, but unfortunately, my very first introduction to the series. How did this series escape my radar for so long? It proved to be a hidden gem from the very first page.
Fresh out of Quantico, Special Agent Liv Bergen is assigned to the FBI’s Denver Bureau. While hunting for a permanent place to live with her bloodhound, Beulah, she stays with her sister Frances and her family. Liv expects to spend a quiet Christmas with them while training Beulah, but her peaceful holiday is cut short when she is called in to investigate a high-profile abduction at Denver International Airport.
Five-year-old Maximillian Bennett Williams III—son of a New York City tycoon and a renowned fashion model—vanished during a layover between New York and California. With little Max missing for hours before Denver authorities were alerted, time is running out.
The story’s narration is split between Liv and her 12-year-old nephew, Noah Hogarty, who lives with severe cerebral palsy. Though non-verbal, Noah is remarkably sharp, resourceful, and eager to communicate—qualities many people overlook due to his physical disability. Above all, he loves helping his Aunt Liv solve mysteries.
While the central mystery is exceptionally well-crafted, the novel offers so much more than a standard procedural. It shines through its focus on family values, strong relationships, and female empowerment. By featuring a main character with a physical disability, Sandra Brannan brings a tender, deeply human element to an otherwise tense plot.
Brannan carefully builds the suspense, handing the reader tantalizing puzzle pieces before plunging into a breathless climax. I have definitely found a new favorite mystery series. Starting at book four just means I have the pleasure of going back to read the first three while waiting for the next installment!

ReplyDeleteNormally, when I'm looking for a good mystery to read, I check out the winners and nominees of the Edgar Award. Their list of books hasn't failed me so far.
Hi, Peter! I've checked online, so far only National Bookstores have copies. I haven't tried the Edgar Award list; thank you for suggesting. ♥
