Required Reading: July 2013

Hi, everyone! I managed to fit six books into my June reading list, which feels pretty great—especially since I didn’t rate anything below 4 ★.

  1. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon — 4/5 ★
  2. The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster — 5/5 ★
  3. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn — 4/5 ★
  4. The Janus Reprisal (Covert-One #9) by Jamie Freveletti — 4/5 ★
  5. Strawberry Shortcake Murder by Joanne Fluke — 4/5 ★
  6. The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr — 4/5 ★

For July, our TFG-F2F book of the month is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. I realized this is the kind of book that needs a reader’s full attention, so I’m only putting two other titles on my possible reading list for the month.

  1. A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin — a buddy read scheduled to begin on July 15.
  2. Bulalo Soup for the Sole by Theresa R. Lariosa — a collection of essays on singlehood. Not exactly reflective of my current status, but it sounds like a thoughtful work of Filipino literature to keep me company all month.
July marks the start of the second half of the year. I’m finally back on track with my reading schedule, and I’m hoping I can keep up the momentum for the rest of the year. I might also put together a post about the books I’ve read over the past six months and write a few mini reviews to make up for my backlogs.

Happy reading, dear ones!

    1. Thank you, Monique.
You are right. I was daunted by its dragging length, which pushed me to put it on hold since last year. I hope to do better this time around. ❤

    1. Don't be, sweety. No one can tell when the next reading rut will hit again, even I. Just make the most of what time can offer. :)

  3. Hello, Louize! The Bulalo Soup book looks interesting. I'll be waiting on your thoughts about this.

I do hope you enjoy Love in the Time of Cholera. It's a beautiful love story. I've read a lot of Marquez's works, and this book is on my top 3! The other 2 are Chronicle of a Death Foretold and, of course, One Hundred Years of Solitude, which I feel everyone should read.

    1. Hello, Peter! So far, I've read the introduction and the 1st essay on The Bulalo Soup, and I think I'm really going to enjoy this one.

I've read the 1st 50 pages of LITTOC last night without any hitch. I believe I will like it too. Thank you. :)

  4. I am curious about Strawberry Shortcake Murder and the Bulalo Soup. Both are nomnomnom titles. Hee.

I started on A Game of Thrones this July and it's pretty good. Have you watched the tv series? :)

    1. Hi Tin! Both books are light and fun. That is, if your idea of light and fun is like mine -bespeckled with murder, crass language, and unguarded humor. :)

Yes, I've seen the tv series, I'm okay with it. Nothing I've seen ever affect my reading, even before.

  5. I look forward to your updates/review of Bulalo Soup! Looks like something I would enjoy, too, based on the title. Hee.

And here's to ACoK! We can do it! :)

    1. Hahaha, I seriously think you will enjoy this book, and even non-single ladies will have fun with it too. I'm having a hilarious day as it is. Mind you, since people are interested, why don't we assign this as another Traveling Book?

And yes, we shall conquer ACoK! ♥

    1. Thank you, Bennard. I am loving LITTOC, btw. I may not be able to follow the reading schedule since I'd like to finish it as soon as I can. :) But I will definitely join the online discussion.

  7. I feel so bad not being able to join you on ACOK. It would've been fun but I think my pregnant powers cannot anymore take another chunkster at this time, haha!

    1. Oh, we will dutifully forgive you, Lynai, with the conditions that we get first dibs on seeing the baby pictures.

      God bless you both! ♥
