Required Reading: May 2013

April marked TFG’s 3rd year anniversary—a month-long celebration packed with both online and offline activities! It was a busy yet incredibly rewarding month. I had the privilege of moderating our monthly F2F discussion and helping prepare for our grand anniversary finale. With all that going on, I think my reading rut excuses are totally valid (so I don't have to blame it all on the summer heat!).

Out of my three required reads for April, I only managed to finish Smaller and Smaller Circles by F.H. Batacan (Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell will have to spill over into May). However, I did complete a few other titles.

April Wrap-Up

  1. The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes – 4/5 stars -A very worthy buddy read.

  2. A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman – 5/5 stars -Listened to the audiobook narrated by the author while following along with the 9-page PDF.

  3. My Imaginary Ex by Mina V. Esguerra – 4/5 stars -A sweet, welcome reprieve while taking a break from JS & MN.

  4. Smaller and Smaller Circles by F.H. Batacan – 4/5 stars -A surprisingly quick read.

May TBR

With April in the books, I’m letting out a contented sigh of relief and welcoming May with some dedicated reading time.

  1. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz -Third time's the charm! Since I’ve failed to finish this twice already, I'm taking a new approach: reading/listening to it in baby steps alongside the rest of my list.

  2. What the Darkness Brings (Sebastian St. Cyr #8) by C.S. Harris -I’ve been dying to dive into this one ever since it came out. So excited!

  3. The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau -An ARC that I need to finish in less than 30 days.
This might be a conservative TBR, but it’s best not to bite off more than I can chew—plus, it leaves room to add more books later if I get on a roll!

Be sure to visit Tina’s blog to check out what the rest of the challengers are reading this month.

Happy May reading, everyone! What's on your stack this month?

  1. Another Mina Esguerra book! :)

And this post reminds me to read another Gaiman. The last one I read was Coraline and I loved it.

    1. Hi Lynai. I owe Mina (Summit) some reviews too, I hope to accomplish that before the next ReaderCon. We have to support local writers as much as we can, di ba?

And Neil Gaiman, I am eager to read his new book -The Ocean at the End of the Lane. :)

  5. Let me know if you like Oscar Wao, mommy. I've been eyeing his books ever since but I don't have the guts to read it. Sometimes, thin books are way dangerous than chunksters. :D

    1. Will do, dear. But I can already assume that you'll like Oscar Wao. The language is pretty hip and the age bracket is a lot closer to yours.
