Required Reading: January 2013


Know those times when life gets in the way? Well, life and I are having a huge staredown at the moment. It happens! Sorry for diving straight into my reading without posting this first.

As promised, I'll be posting my monthly reading list. The best way to track it is by joining the Required Reading challenge hosted by Tina of One More Page, alongside a few other bookish friends. The idea is simple: pick books following a given theme (or make up your own), and do your best to finish them before the month ends.

These are the rules:
  • Books chosen for the challenge should be in your current TBR (To Be Read) pile as of the month of the post. For example, if you decide to join in March, your selections should have been on your TBR list by February.
  • Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) and galleys are welcome.
  • Posting reviews isn't mandatory (though getting them out of the way is always a plus!).
  • A theme will be posted every month, but following it is optional. You can pick your own theme—the main goal is to read the books you've been wanting to get to.
  • Most importantly: have fun! If you don't finish a book, no worries. If you do, feel free to reward yourself... preferably with a new book! :D

January TBR

Without further ado, here is my list for the month. Wish me luck—fingers crossed!
  1. Stargirl and Love, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli — Both were recommended by my daughter last year, and she wouldn't take no for an answer. Luckily, Stargirl is a literary winner that fits nicely into my reading challenge.

  2. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury — The TFG-F2F book of the month. I’ve read this before, but there’s no harm in re-reading it to join the online discussion. Support, support!

  3. Merry Christmas, Alex Cross by James Patterson — Anyone who knows me knows I love Alex Cross; it’s one of the series I follow avidly. The cover for the next installment is already out, so I really need to catch up.

  4. No Strings Attached by Mina V. Esguerra — Part of my pledge to support Philippine Literature by reading one local title a month. Plus, Mina is a TFG friend, so starting the year with one of her books felt right.

  5. The Dracula Dossier by James Reese — A leftover from last year. It was practically screaming at me from the shelf: "Finish me! Finish me, you sloth!"

  6. Grave Goods by Ariana Franklin — Another series I follow closely. It’s been too long since I last spent time with Ms. Franklin’s work.

    I loved the Stargirl books! I loved the first one more, though. That's why I named one of my gadgets after it, hehehe. :)

    I can't say I like one better than the other. They compliment each other nicely, from both Leo and Stargirl's POV, which completed the whole story.
    That reminds me, I should write a proper review for this, at least for Cheyenne's sake.

    Wow! There are already nine of us who are doing this challenge. Yay! And that's a lot of books for one month. I'm jealous!

    Hi, Louize! Out of the 7 books that you listed for this month, I've read just 1, and that's Fahrenheit 451. I really, really like that book! I do hope you have fun during your discussion. It's this Saturday already, yes?

    I think I have Stargirl somewhere in my shelf. Good thing you reminded me about it. It's a quick read, I think, so I guess I'll spend one lazy afternoon reading that.

      Stargirl was a quick read. Spinelli did the narration in one fluid motion. No down moments.
